Cape of Good Hope
The lovely mild sunny weather continued today as we
travelled down the Atlantic coast from Cape Town to the Cape of Good Hope, the
southernmost point of Africa. We took the coast highway and were treated to
spectacular views of the rocky, mountainous terrain that is so typical of this
part of the African seaboard.
We were struck by the number of road signs warning people to
avoid baboons. Out tour leader explained that baboons are very aggressive and
clever and will steal from people and cars if given any chance at all. If you
are walking along near a baboon and holding any kind of food or drink the
baboon is highly likely to attack you and steal it – and you may get hurt in
the process. The are clever enough to test car doors and if one opens they will
get straight in and tear it apart looking for food. If you see it and try and
chase it out it will crap in the car. Glad we don’t have any in Oz!
In the afternoon we drove to an area where we
could view a large colony of African Penguins. The African Penguin is bigger
than the Fairy Penguins you can see down at Phillip Island but they are still
not all that huge. Photos: note the baboon on the car in the second photo. The third photo is of an Elan.
